Following the career of Mattia Cattaneo a little, we encounter good results over the years again and again. In 2011 however the young rider from Alzano Lombardo succeeded in leaving a truly lasting impression. Not only for the Mocklist, but certainly in the minds and notebooks of many team bosses.

The first results of Cattaneo can be found in youth and junior classes and have to be ascribed primarily on time trials. 2008, in his final year as a junior, Cattaneo won five races and was placed several times in the top ten of Italian races. His biggest success outside the boot, he could celebrate at the World Junior Championship in Cape Town. Only Frenchman Johan Le Bon was faster than Cattaneo. He also triumphed at the international-staffed Trofeo Emilio Paganessi.

Accompanied by premature praise, Cattaneo then moved into the U23 class in 2009. At first he could not fullfill the high expectations. A victory and a handful of rankings and he was effectively light years away from the national team. Health problems, such as kidney stones, and similar complaints threw Cattaneo back again and again. In short, it did not went well at all.

This should the improve abruptly in 2011. Not even at the beginning of the season, but then in May. With an impressive solo victory on stage four, Cattaneo could secure the overall victory at the demanding Giro delle Pesche Nettarine. Abruptly he was able to catapult himself into the extended group of favorites for the GiroBio (2.2), the amateur-edition of the Giro d'Italia. Nevertheless, the still by his physical problems unsettled Cattaneo went to the start with the target of winning a stage. The course not beeing too heavy, with many typical Italian stages seemed to be just right for him. Already on the second stage to Rodi Garganico, Cattaneo managed the jump into a leading group of eleven riders. This group managed to bring a lead of just over two minutes to the finish line. A venture, that brought Mattia in a very favorable situation for the overall classification. The fourth stage, which went uphill to the monastery of Montecassino, should then bring Cattaneo in the leaders jersey. Eleven seconds behind stage winner Stefano Agostini, he finished ninth and took a lead of 95 seconds to the best of the favorites in the second part of the race. Slightly more costly proved then to be the fifth stage, a long mountain-top finish at the Campo Imperatore high above L'Aquila. He was able to save eight seconds against the White Russian Siarhei Novikov and 51 seconds to the stage winner, the Colombian Anacona. Till now he hadn't believed in a total win, but after the sixth place in the individual time trial from Alba Adriatica, he already felt quite safe. Approximately one minute to Anacona and three moderate stages in northern Italy left. And it should be enough. However Cattaneo had to fight like a lion. As expected, we saw numerous attacks from the other teams. After the eighth stage, only 26 seconds were left, but that should be enough for Cattaneo. At Asiago in the finale he was able to defend the again. Surely it must be noted that Cattaneo benefited enormously from the early breakaway group, but even without it, he would have easily placed in the Top Ten. A strong performance for a driver who was so plagued by his health over two years.

You could actually end the season now after two wins in two of the most important and most difficult races around Italy, but not Cattaneo. Seemingly inspired by his successes and like riding on rails he really got started. In Sicily, he succeeded in the U23 time trial championship and made it to the podium in Paternò and so bridged to his junior times in time trials. In July, he was the best Italian rider in the European road race, in which the actually very well-staffed Italian team overslept the decisive group in Offida. The fifth place is likely nothing to bring joy to him and the team. In mid-August Cattaneo finally returned to the podiums of Italy. First he let Siarhei Novikov no chance in a two men sprint at the GP di Poggiana (1.2U), two days later he won the prestigious and difficult GP Capodarco (1.2). This time he needed no companion and won solo with 40 seconds ahead of the next larger group. 22 kilometers before the finish, Cattaneo had set his decisive attack at the up to 24% steep Muro di Capodarco and then won the race, riding solo against a group of 17 riders.

Cattaneo could preserve this super constitution and took it to the Giro della Valle d'Aosta Mont Blanc (2.2). A race that requires enormous skill on the mountains and a lot of toughness. L atter Cattaneo had already shown enough this season, now also found himself some mountain skills. Adding this to the great shape, he could place himself in fifth place of the general classification.

Just a week later Cattaneo stood again at the start. The Tour de l'Avenir (2.NC) calls with two stages in Italy, on top of that with a course that corresponded Cattaneo and his abilities. As expected, it was a very open and marked by a lot of breakaways, race. Mattia caught the decisive group to Porrentruy and he was eight at the mountaintop finish in La Salève, but lost time on the Colombian Chaves. At the italian finale Cattaneo added another good second place and placed third in the overall standings behind Esteban Chaves and David Boily.

With the recently ended Tour de l'Avenir, Mattia Cattaneo has shown once again that he is being courted by many Pro Tour teams with good reason. Right now the Passista Scalatore did not came to a decision. It is therefore not impossible that he will stay for another year at Trevigiani. The chance or the perspective is rather low.
